Because No Grandparent Should Feel Alone

Introduction

Imagine a world where no elderly person feels lonely. A world where young people and retirees come together to support, befriend, and adopt a grandparent—offering companionship, conversation, and care.

We are launching Befriend-A-Grandparent, a community-driven initiative designed to create meaningful relationships between volunteers and elderly individuals who experience isolation. Through simple yet impactful activities like sharing a coffee, taking a walk, or engaging in conversation, we can bring joy and warmth to their lives. 

Why we need your help Loneliness among the elderly is a growing crisis. Studies suggest that loneliness can increase the risk of early death by as much as 26-45%, comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.  It has also been linked to faster cognitive decline and a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Many seniors experience isolation due to loss of family, limited mobility, or simply not having someone to talk to regularly. At the same time, young people and retirees often seek meaningful ways to contribute to society and form intergenerational connections. Befriend-A-Grandparent bridges this gap, fostering a support network where kindness and companionship flourish.

What do we do

• We match volunteers (young adults, families, retirees) with elderly individuals in their community.
• Volunteers engage in regular visits, conversations, and activities like taking a stroll, playing board games, or sharing meals.
• We provide training and resources to ensure a meaningful and respectful interaction.
• We organise community events and outings to bring adopted grandparents and volunteers together for larger gatherings.

How Your Contribution Helps

Your donations will go toward: 

• Creating a database of volunteers and the elderly- by interviewing and visiting them.
• Develop all the safeguarding policies and procedures.
• Setting up a pilot with 10 be-friended pairs. 

In future we will aim to:

• Organising meetups, community events, and training sessions.
• Creating an easy-to-use platform to match volunteers with seniors.
• Covering transportation costs for visits and outings.
• Providing resources and toolkits for volunteers.
• Spreading awareness and expanding our reach.
